AETIOLOGY OF AN EXPRESSION is, when we assign a reason why we have used this or that particular proposition or enunciation; as,-Gal 2:6, ἐμοὶ γὰρ οἱ δοκοῦντες οὐδὲν προσανέθεντο. Comp. 2Co 5:12; Heb 2:8, where the Gnomon observes, “γὰρ, for, often has the effect of an AEtiology of the expression.” See Gnom. on the passages.Consult other dictionaries:

Gnomon Technical Terms
The Gnomon Technical Terms was written in 1742 by Johann Albrecht Bengel and is the result of twenty years’ labor. Bengel’s Gnomon awakened a fresh interest in the study of the New Testament. The Gnomon of the New Testament is still one of the books most valued by expositors of the New Testament.
